The Society of Professional Journalists has a code of ethics that, if it were actually followed, would leave groups such as this one with not a thing to do.

The preamble of the code reads:

Members of the Society of Professional Journalists believe that public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy. The duty of the journalist is to further those ends by seeking truth and providing a fair and comprehensive account of events and issues. Conscientious journalists from all media and specialties strive to serve the public with thoroughness and honesty. Professional integrity is the cornerstone of a journalist’s credibility. Members of the Society share a dedication to ethical behavior and adopt this code to declare the Society’s principles and standards of practice.

If only this actually meant anything.  But the SPJ has also established a hotline to help journalists whenever they have questions of ethics.  And RATM feels strongly that we might want to help out in this particular area.

The number is 866-345-3662

When you call, leave a message that includes the name of the “journalist,” the media source, the title of the piece and the specifics of the lie, bias, omission or whatever the betrayal.

Let’s help keep them “honest” by holding them accountable.
